Success!

We have been very busy here at Canine Corrals - and successfully so I may add! We held our first fund raiser last weekend - I can only say THANKS a hundred times to all who helped! Rachel and Eileen worked hard at getting things ready and everyone who contributed did so quite generously!! A great big THANKS to Dory from Premier Jewelry for her wonderful donation!! So, now for the BIG news - we are ready for our first ever attempt for community outreach and will be approaching a dog owner to see if they would like to participate in our program!! I am very excited as I have located a dog owner that seems to be trying very hard to care for their dogs and would maybe appreciate a bit of help!! I'm a bit nervous as this will be my first attempt at "outreach" and there is no telling how it will go - but hey - never know how things will go until I try! WISH ME LUCK!!!

Spring - maybe?

It seems the winter is winding down - yippee! I am sure us north easterners are not the only ones grateful that winter is departing. Think of the outdoor dogs waiting for some warmth from the sun! To help move the group along, we will be holding our first fundraiser - a jewelry party with Premier Designs - they will be donating part of the proceeds from any orders we submit to Canine Corrals! The official party is April 9th at Rachels house, but catalog orders can be submitted also. Contact me at canine.corrals@gmail.com for more information. Premier Designs website is www.premierdesigns.com.

On another note, the need for a website keeps popping up. The average cost to build a website is about 1500.00 which is not in the budget right now. If anyone knows of a website designer that could give us a deep discount, please let me know!! Thanks!

One recommendation from "The Coalition to Unchain Dogs" is to pick a neighborhood and become well known in that area. Any ideas on which neighborhood in the Pittsburgh area might be a good place? Something not too intimidating.........like maybe the West End? The Coalition's recommendation is to start canvassing an area, identify a potential owner, and start to build good will in the area. Any thoughts on that subject?

That's all for now - keep thinking green!!

Sitting out the winter

I have been in FL for about 5 weeks now - trying to avoid the cold! My thoughts constantly go back to poor animals in the cold, both domesticated and wildlife. Feel sorry for the wildlife trying to forage for food below 3 feet of snow! Nature is a curious thing. On the other hand, I have become the crazy cat lady! I have tried to capture feral kittens that frequent a restaurant where I have been going to breakfast. No go! They are probably 3 months old - no mother in sight. However, the kittens are very skittish and run the minute you look at them. Poor little things. I did notify a local cat rescue, but it doesnt sound promising. Then today I noticed what I thought to be some puppies dumped by the side of the road! Jesus Mary and Joseph! What is wrong with people! So I came back to my camper and got my dog crate thinking I would gather them up and at least take them to a shelter. Well when I got back they were gone, and there was no sign of mayhem (like injured or dead puppies on the road) so I can only hope that someone picked them up. Two other interesting happenings - I called the local authorities the other day to report a cow meandering down the road! It was a young cow and sooner or later it would get hit. And on a final and good note - my friend arrived home from an early morning workout at the gym to hear a kitten meowing frantically from underneath her car! The poor little thing must have gone up in her car to find warmth and hung on during the short ride home! This story has a good ending as she was able to find a home for little kitty - way to go Caroline! That is life in Florida for now. looking forward to going home in a few weeks and really getting to work on Canine Corrals!!

Nay-sayers!

Had my first run in with those who think this is a useless idea! Big discussion on how once unchained the dogs will dig out or climb over. I explained the fencing method of how the fence is laid into the ground at a right angle to the vertical fence - if the dogs start to dig it will hit fencing laying flat on the ground! Next argument was that the dogs will climb up and over the fence......I guess it is possible.......I'm not sure......I will have to think on that one. Anyway - GRRRRRRR to the nay-sayers!

Working With My Team!

Spent today working on the Narrative for the non-profit status - what a legal maze! Good thing I have Rachel to help out - excellent supplier for words I can't come up with! Ha Ha! Nice to have good brain cells working - albeit a bit clumsy with the supplies! Eileen in the background is distracting us, but she has agreed to be on the Board also, so no complaints from me! I feel like we have a great group for the Board - nice representation from many sectors and committed people. My first official presentation will be this weekend - WISH ME LUCK!

Feeling inspired from tonite!

Went to a fund raiser at Del's in Bloomfield tonight......well who doesn't love Del's food! Always reminds me of going there with Aunt Alice and Uncle Bucky! Anywhoooo.... The Animal Rescue League sponsored the event. I wasnt permitted to pass out any information about "Canine Corrals", but I did get to network - what's a non-profit without a bit of networking! Also got a few leads on "who to call". Note to self: wear your glasses! That way you might be able to read the info you have written on your cheat sheet note pad!

Great to see that there are those out there who will support efforts to improve the lives of our four legged friends! Gives me HOPE!

Frustration!

Very frustrated right now....seem to be hitting brick wall at all turns!
